5 numbers on substance use disorder

Seventeen percent of people aged 12 or older in the United States had a substance use disorder in the past year, according to recent data from the 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health.

Here are five numbers to know about substance use disorder from the survey:

  1. 48.7 million people had a substance use disorder in the last year.
  2. 29.5 million people had an alcohol use disorder.
  3. 27.2 million people had a drug use disorder.
  4. 8 million people had both an alcohol use and drug use disorder.
  5. The number of people with an SUD in the past year was highest among young adults between 18 and 25 at 27.8%, or 9.7 million people.
