2 in 5 addiction medicine fellowship spots are unfilled

Around four in 10 addiction medicine fellowships are unfilled in 2023, according to a National Resident Matching Program report published Nov. 29. 

The program matched 201 physicians in addiction medicine or addiction psychiatry programs during the 2023 medicine and pediatric specialties match, leaving 155 unfilled positions. Of 141 total addiction medicine and addiction psychiatry programs, 58 were filled, and 80 had open spots. 

In addiction medicine, 138 physicians were matched with programs, leaving 94 open spots. In addiction psychiatry, 63 physicians were matched to fellowships, leaving 61 unfilled spots. 

Overall, the National Resident Matching Program placed 7,723 applications in fellowship programs, leaving 1,345 unfilled positions, or 14.8%.
