The Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment at the University of Missouri opened a $54.8 million, 74,000-square-foot facility at the MU Health Care South Providence Medical Park in Columbia.

Clinical operations at the center began in March, according to a May 7 news release from the university. The system said the facility will allow it to serve twice as many patients each year and includes double the number of patient rooms to expand access and staffing capacity.

The Thompson Center completed more than 18,000 patient visits across 15 clinical subspecialities in the last year and served approximately 4,500 families at the previous facility.

The expansion was supported through more than $9 million in private contributions to the Thompson Foundation for Autism and Neurodevelopment, a $31.5 million appropriation from the state of Missouri and support from the University of Missouri and University of Missouri Health Care.

The facility includes Missouri’s first intensive outpatient program for patients ages 3-19 with severe behaviors limiting access to their communities, the release said.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
