Northwell Health’s Glen Cove (N.Y.) Hospital emergency department received an Autism Friendly Designation from Autism Speaks.
The recognition followed specialized staff training on providing emergency care to autistic patients, according to an Oct. 7 news release from the system. The training addressed communication, sensory needs and ways to reduce anxiety and distress during emergency department visits.
The designation recognizes organizations working to make their services more inclusive and accessible to autistic individuals.
One in 31 children in the U.S. has autism, according to the CDC.
