Olean (N.Y.) General Hospital, part of Buffalo, N.Y.-based Kaleida Health, plans to add a dedicated comprehensive psychiatric emergency program as part of an emergency department expansion and renovation project.
The program will be a secure behavioral health treatment unit within the hospital’s emergency department footprint, according to a May 11 news release shared with Becker’s. The unit will include five adult beds and two pediatric beds for patients experiencing mental health emergencies.
Currently, behavioral health patients are treated within the hospital’s general emergency treatment area. The new program is designed to provide a separate treatment space focused on psychiatric emergency care.
Funding for the comprehensive psychiatric emergency program was announced in June 2024 through the New York State Office of Mental Health. The remaining funding, $17 million, was announced in January 2025 as part of New York Gov. Kathy Hochul’s healthcare investments, the release said.
The broader project includes a 13,300-square-foot addition and renovation of the hospital’s existing 10,100-square-foot emergency department space. The redesigned department will include 25 treatment rooms and additional behavioral health treatment areas.
At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
