US suicide rate declines 2%: 5 things to know

The U.S. suicide rate declined 2% from 2023 to 2024, falling from 14.1 to 13.7 per 100,000. 

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention analyzed data from the CDC WISQARS national suicide surveillance, according to an April 29 news release from the foundation.

Here are five things to know:

  1. The rate also decreased 4% from 2022 to 2024, though it remains 32% higher than in 2000. 
  1. Suicide-related deaths fell 1% year over year, from 49,316 to 48,824. 
  1. Hawaiian Native/Pacific Islander populations saw the largest decline, with rates dropping from 15.4 to 11.5 per 100,000 — a 25% decrease. 
  1. Rates among individuals ages 15-34 declined 4%, from 15.9 to 15.2 per 100,000, continuing a downward trend from 2021 through 2024. 
  1. State-level trends varied Thirty-one states saw decreases between 2003 and 2024, with Vermont’s suicide rate declining from 18.0 to 14.6 per 100,000 (19%) and West Virginia’s from 18.5 to 16.5 (11%). New Hampshire’s suicide rate increased from 14.6 to 16.3 (12%) and Iowa’s went from 15.5 to 17.1 (10%).
