Texas to lead ibogaine research after pharma proposals fall short

Texas leaders said the state will move forward with its own research program on ibogaine after no drugmaker met funding requirements.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick and Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows said the state had previously allocated $50 million for ibogaine research after testimony from veterans on its potential to treat post-traumatic stress disorder and brain injuries, according to an April 1 news release from the lieutenant governor’s office.

The decision follows an update from the Texas Health and Human Services Commission that no pharmaceutical company has submitted a proposal meeting the law’s standards to receive state funding and begin clinical trials.

Texas will fully fund its own research effort and partner with medical research teams in the state to conduct the work, the release said.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
