Nearly half of U.S. healthcare workers reported frequent burnout, according to a March 12 Government Accountability Office report reviewing federal mental health grant programs from 2022 through 2024.
The report cites 2022 survey data showing 46% of healthcare workers reported burnout often or very often, while 57% reported symptoms of anxiety and 34% reported symptoms of depression.
To address these challenges, HSS awarded $103.2 million through three grant programs to 45 organizations, including hospital systems and universities, to support activities such as mental health screening, services and resilience training for healthcare workers.
Grant-funded initiatives trained up to approximately 135,000 participants per year and included wellness programs, peer and crisis support and other services aimed at improving workforce well-being.
The grant programs ended in December 2024, though some recipients received extensions to complete activities through Dec. 31, 2025. The GAO said HHS plans to review data from the programs alongside final reports from grantees in spring 2026 to inform potential future initiatives.
