San Bernardino County in California will receive $1.1 million in federal community project funding to rehabilitate the Merrill Center Crisis Stabilization Unit in Fontana.
The behavioral health facility serves as a mental health urgent care center and stabilizes between 300 and 350 individuals each month, according to a March 5 news release from the county. Nearly 30% of those treated are at risk of homelessness or currently unhoused.
Planned renovations include upgrades to common areas, commercial-grade kitchen equipment, security infrastructure, lighting and outdoor amenities to improve safety, durability and functionality.
The funding is part of nearly $7 million in total federal community project funding for seven projects across San Bernardino County.
