Bucks County, Pa., will open a diversion, assessment, restoration and treatment (DART) center in Doylestown aimed at reducing criminal justice involvement for individuals with behavioral health needs.

The 23,00-square-foot facility is expected to begin accepting residents this month and will serve adults with serious mental illness and co-occurring substance use issues who are involved with the criminal justice system. The DART Center can serve up to 28 people, according to a Feb. 27 news release from the county.

The residential treatment center houses three tracks: short-term assessment and stabilization for up to eight individuals; restoration of competency unit for up to four individuals deemed incompetent to stand trials; and a community integration track for up to 16 individuals in need of treatment and daily living skill development.

Construction on the center began in late 2023. The total projected cost to build the facility is about $19.8 million, with nearly $1.8 million coming from the county’s general fund and the remainder from federal and state funds.

The GEO Group will manage day-to-day operations at the center, with oversight from Bucks County behavioral health and developmental programs, according to the release.
