Baxter Health in Mountain Home, Ark., has launched an evidence-based dementia doll therapy program through its geriatric behavioral health unit, becoming the first hospital in the state to offer the tool.
The program launched in partnership with the Grand Baby Project, a Houston-based organization and provider of dementia doll therapy. The therapy aims to reduce anxiety, agitation and feelings of loneliness, according to a Feb. 11 news release from Baxter Health. It uses specially designed dolls to support patients living with advanced dementia by promoting attachment, identity and a sense of purpose. If a patient responds well to the doll, it will be sent home with them as part of ongoing therapy.
The Baxter Health Foundation purchased 20 dolls to launch the program and is seeking donations to expand the initiative, the release said.
