Investigators said falling ice may have caused a gas leak that led to an explosion and fire Feb. 2 at the Greater Nashua Mental Health Center in Nashua, N.H., ABC affiliate WMUR reported Feb. 3.

Fire crews were inside the facility responding to a reported gas leak when the explosion occurred. Within minutes, the facility burst into flames.

Around 40 people were in the center when they evacuated after “smelling gas and hearing a hissing sound,” WMUR reported. All staff and patients have been accounted for with three firefighters injured, including one seriously.

The incident began around 2 p.m. and continued into the evening as crews worked to contain the fire, which was under control by 6 p.m.

Fire crews’ investigations are ongoing, the report said.
