The Pride Institute, owned by King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services, will close its inpatient addiction treatment program in Eden Prairie, Minn., on Jan. 1.

Founded in 1986, the center’s residential program offered affirming care to LGBTQ+ clients in recovery. The Eden Prairie site will transition to outpatient services for all adults, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation, Stuart Morrical, director of business development at the institute, wrote in an email to Becker’s.

“Changes in the Minnesota treatment landscape require us to update our service offerings to remain sustainable and mission-driven — and to support expanded access to treatment for more populations,” Mr. Morrical wrote. “Pride programming has experienced declining demand at the Eden Prairie location for several years, with an average of about 35 patients or less at any given time.”

Minnesota Public Radio News reported the change will result in layoffs for 90% to 95% of the staff. Fewer than 42 clients will be displaced, but advocates say the broader loss may prevent others from seeking treatment. Inpatient services will be offered in Palm Springs, Calif.

Latitudes at Tapestry in St. Paul will become the only residential treatment program in the Midwest to serve LGBTQ+ individuals exclusively, according to the report. It has 22 beds — roughly half of Pride’s former capacity.
