The U.S. suicide rate ticked down in 2024 after reaching its highest level in more than 80 years, according to provisional CDC data released Dec. 9.
Last year’s age-adjusted suicide rate was 13.7 deaths per 100,000 people, down from 14.1 per 100,000 in 2023.
Most age groups saw relatively stable trends, though suicide deaths declined significantly among adults ages 25 to 34.
Longer-term patterns, however, tell a more complex story. Suicide rates rose 37% between 2000 and 2018, then fell 5% between 2018 and 2020. Rates climbed again during the pandemic, jumping to 14.3 per 100,000 in 2022 — the highest level seen since 1941.
