The Hiram W. Davis Medical Center in Petersburg, Va., will close by the end of 2027.
In August 2024, Virginia announced plans to close the 150-bed medical facility. The site provides medical care to individuals receiving behavioral care in other state facilities and individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The building systems have met or exceeded their estimated life, and the building design does not allow for phased renovations, according to state officials.
At a May 21 meeting, the state’s Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services laid out the timeline for closing the facility. The site currently has 33 patients, three of whom are expected to be discharged by the end of the summer.
The rest of the facility’s patients will be transferred to group homes, community nursing facilities or the Southeastern Virginia Training Center.
The facility has 152 staff members. Most will be transferred to other state-operated facilities, according to the timeline.
