Patient volumes were down 1.6% year-over-year at UHS’s behavioral health facilities.
King of Prussia, Pa.-based UHS reported its first quarter earnings April 28. The company recorded an operating income of $454.8 million, up from $388.8 million in the same quarter last year.
Here are five notes:
- On an April 29 earnings call, CFO Steve Filton told investors severe weather hurt UHS’ behavioral volumes in the first quarter.
Mr. Filton said the company contended with winter weather in central states that typically don’t experience winter weather in the first quarter.
“We really see an outsized impact on our outpatient and our child and adolescent business when we experience those winter conditions,” he said, according to a transcript of the call by Seeking Alpha. - The company still expects to meet its target of behavioral patient day revenue growth of 2.5 to 3% in 2025, Mr. Filton said.
- Net revenue in the behavioral health segment was $1.76 billion in the first quarter, up from $1.66 billion in the same time period last year. Net income was $340.8 million.
- UHS is not seeing any changes in its referral patterns in the behavioral business, Mr. Filton said.
- UHS operates 334 inpatient behavioral health facilities. The company also owns 29 inpatient acute-care hospitals.
