The Joint Commission preliminarily denied accreditation to Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center, a psychiatric hospital in Jessup, Md., the Washington Post reported April 10.

The exact reason for the denial was unclear, according to the Post. In a statement, The Joint Commission told the outlet it is required to keep information about preliminary denials confidential.

A Washington Post investigation published in 2024 alleged hospital leaders and Maryland officials “failed for years to act on complaints about mismanagement, inadequate staffing and violence” at Perkins Hospital Center.

The former CEO of the facility was terminated in May 2024 following allegations of misconduct, according to the Post.

Most patients at the 289-bed facility are held by a court order. Perkins is managed by the Maryland Department of Health.

The state has 10 days to submit a request to appeal The Joint Commission’s decision, and 30 days to submit supporting documentation, according to the Post. The Maryland Department of Health did not respond to a request for comment from the Post.
