According to a May 14 news release from California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s office,the first round of state funding will be available this summer. In March, California voters narrowly approved proposition 1, which allowed the state to borrow $4.4 billion to build new treatment beds and sites. Around 75% of this funding will be available beginning in July.
Another $2 billion in borrowed funds will go toward supportive housing units, with guidance for this funding issued by the end of 2024, according to the release.
Mr. Newsom is pushing counties to start putting the funding to use quickly, according to a May 15 report from CalMatters.
“It’s time to do your job. It’s time to get things done,” Mr. Newsom said May 14. “You asked for these reforms. We’ve provided them. Now it’s time to deliver,” he said.
