According to a May 1 news release from Hershey-based Penn State Health, the lease for the institute’s current location will expire in May 2026. The system has been unable to renew the lease.

Options for relocation include renovating space at Penn State Holy Spirit Medical Center in Camp Hill or constructing a new site. Penn State is also looking for sites to host its outpatient and psychiatric, behavioral and addiction treatment services.

Construction on a new site needs to begin by late summer to ensure continuity of care for patients, according to the news release.

“We are committed to making the transition as seamless as possible and to minimize any disruption of care and services for our patients and their families, clinicians, staff, educators, students and researchers,” Erika Saunders, MD, chair of the department of psychiatry and behavioral health at Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, said.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
