The Harris County Commissioners Court voted to approve a resolution supporting the workers’ efforts, which, if successful, would mark the first time public health workers have unionized in the county.

Employees at the Harris Center, the largest mental health provider in the county, are organizing for increased safety, higher pay and more standardized systems, according to Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo.

The Harris Center, meanwhile, shared a statement with Becker’s that read, in part: “As an organization, we firmly believe a direct relationship between employee and employer is the best model. We simply do not believe third-party representation is needed but will abide by our employees’ decision. Our employees are actively involved in decision-making so we can collectively provide the best services for our clients and be the best place to work.

“We appreciate the Commissioners Court’s support of our employees. We agree that a safe, healthy, and fair workplace is essential for our employees to thrive personally and professionally. … By prioritizing employee well-being and creating an inclusive atmosphere, we can foster strong bonds and a sense of unity among our team.”
