AHA issues letter on reauthorization of the SUPPORT Act, adds policy recommendations

The American Hospital Association sent a letter to members of the U.S. House of Representatives on June 14expressing support for the reauthorization of programs in the Substance Use-Disorder Prevention that Promotes Opioid Recovery and Treatment for Patients and Communities Act of 2018 and offering policy recommendations.

The policy recommendations include eliminating the Institutions for Mental Disease exclusion, which limits Medicaid coverage for inpatient treatment at behavioral health facilities; bolstering reimbursements for behavioral health providers; and removing the 190-day lifetime limit that only allows Medicare to cover 190 days of inpatient behavioral health treatment across a patient’s lifetime.
