Behavioral health consortium sets national measurement framework

The Behavioral Health Outcomes Consortium released a standardized framework Oct. 6 aimed at creating a consistent approach to measuring behavioral health outcomes nationwide.

The framework, developed during working sessions at the consortium’s BHOC26 summit in Dana Point, Calif., seeks to address fragmented care and speed the shift to value-based care by linking patient outcomes to payer reimbursement and clinical workflows.

Here are three things to know:

1. The framework focuses on five areas: standardized metrics, accountable care handoffs, transparent patient feedback, workflow optimization and payer-funded pilots. Its metrics cover symptom reduction, daily functioning and post-discharge status across care settings.

2. The framework calls for continuous tracking after patient referrals and responsible point-of-contact handoffs.

3. Payer-funded behavioral health pilots are expected to start in 2027. BHOC is seeking healthcare systems, behavioral health providers and health plans to join the first pilot working group.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
