Sacramento, Calif.-based UC Davis Health opened as an electroconvulsive therapy clinic for patients with serious psychiatric illnesses.
The clinic, located on UC Davis Health’s Sacramento campus, provides electroconvulsive therapy for conditions including treatment-resistant depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia and catatonia, according to a Sept. 8 news release from the system. John Onate, MD, is the clinic’s medical director and practices internal medicine and psychiatry at UC Davis Health.
“ECT is very safe. Patients are under anesthesia throughout the procedure, and our multidisciplinary team carefully monitors them before, during and after treatment,” Dr. Onate said in the release. “For some individuals who have not improved with other therapies, ECT can offer meaningful symptom relief and restore quality of life.”
Treatment is typically delivered two to three times each week. Most patients receive between nine and 15 sessions, though treatment plans are individualized based on patients’ needs and responses.
