Yale New Haven (Conn.) Children’s Hospital launched a Crisis Intervention Center, a dedicated behavioral health treatment area within its emergency department. The center will begin caring for patients in August.

The center will provide 24/7 care for children up to age 15 experiencing behavioral health emergencies, including suicidal thoughts or self-harm, depression, anxiety, substance misuse and other mental health conditions. A multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, social workers and milieu counselors with pediatric behavioral health training will staff the facility, according to a July 21 news release from the system.

The new space uses the Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment and Healing (EmPATH) model, which focuses on rapid evaluation, crisis stabilization and connecting patients with ongoing behavioral health services in a therapeutic environment designed for children.

Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital is one of Connecticut’s largest pediatric healthcare providers with 208 licensed beds. It operates campuses in New Haven and Bridgeport and is part of Yale New Haven Hospital, a 1,541-bed teaching hospital affiliated with Yale School of Medicine.

At the Becker's Fall Behavioral Health Summit, taking place November 4–5 in Chicago, behavioral health leaders and executives will explore strategies for expanding access to care, integrating services, addressing workforce challenges and leveraging innovation to improve outcomes across the behavioral health continuum.
