Greensburg, Pa.-based Independence Health System will open a 28-bed inpatient behavioral health unit at its Latrobe Hospital on June 25, The Tribune-Review reported June 21.
The new unit will replace an aging behavioral health facility at its Westmoreland Hospital campus in Greensburg. It occupies a floor that previously housed an inpatient rehabilitation unit that closed in 2024.
On June 25, patients seeking treatment at the Westmoreland campus will be transferred, and employees from the Greensburg facility will staff the new unit.
The unit will treat adults experiencing depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation, among other behavioral health conditions. It is supported by a $2.5 million donation from the Latrobe Area Hospital Charitable Foundation.
Independence Health System operates five hospitals and employs more than 7,000 people across western Pennsylvania. The nonprofit system launched in 2023 through the merger of Butler (Pa.) Health System and Greensburg-based Excela Health.
WVU Health System signed a definitive agreement to acquire the system earlier this month, with the transaction expected to close this fall.
