Nonprofit organizations continued to operate the majority of U.S. mental health treatment facilities in 2024, though for-profit ownership gained ground compared to 2022, according to KFF.
KFF examined data from the 2024 National Substance Use and Mental Health Services survey — the latest data available — and reflects the distribution of mental health and substance use treatment facilities by ownership type.
Here are the percentages of each ownership model within the two types of facilities:
